When the first space launches began someone noticed that ballpoint pens would not work in a gravity-free environment.

To solve this problem, NASA scientists appointed a leading consultancy firm and appropriated (at the time) twelve million dollars for the project. It took several months to prepare a prototype.

The scientists used up the entire budget allocated for the project to make it but at least the problem had been solved. They were holding a new pen made of special materials fitted with a unique hydraulic system.

This pen could write in a gravity-free environment in any direction, and at temperatures varying between -100° and +300°C.

The Russians had the same problem on their hands, but without the huge economic resources that NASA had at their disposal.

The Russians used a pencil.
